London after dark is a different city entirely

The landmarks you walked past during the day look completely different once the floodlights come on. Tower Bridge reflected gold in the Thames. Big Ben glowing against the night sky. The Mall empty and silent, Buckingham Palace lit from below. Piccadilly Circus alive with colour. Three hours, your own private car, and London at its most spectacular.

When we start — and why it matters

London’s landmarks are only floodlit once it is properly dark. A night tour that starts too early is just a late-afternoon drive. We time the departure around the actual sunset, not a fixed hour.

Winter — October to March: depart 19:00
Fully dark by 17:30 at the shortest days. A 19:00 start gives you London fully illuminated, relatively quiet streets, and the entire evening ahead. Tower Bridge looks best in December with the reflections on the Thames and far fewer tourists around it.
Summer — April to September: depart 21:00
London does not get fully dark until 21:30 in midsummer. The 21:00 start catches the blue hour — the brief window between sunset and full dark when the sky is deep blue and the floodlights are already on. Professional photographers call it the golden thirty minutes. Your tour runs from 21:00 to midnight, finishing with London fully illuminated and largely to yourselves.

How it works

Not a drive-by. Not a bus. Stops for photographs at every landmark.

Your chauffeur collects you from your hotel and drives you to each landmark on your list. At every stop, he parks or waits while you get out, walk to the best vantage point, take your photographs, and spend as long as you like. When you are ready, he takes you to the next one.

There is no guide and no commentary — this is private transport with photo stops. If you want an expert narrating London’s history at each location, we can arrange a qualified Blue Badge Guide from £250 for a half day. Most visitors find the experience speaks for itself after dark.

The landmarks — and why they are worth seeing at night

1.

Tower BridgeThe best night photograph in London. Your chauffeur stops on the south bank where you get the full span of the bridge reflected in the Thames — both towers, the walkway, the river. Crowds thin out after 21:00 and you have the viewpoint to yourself.
2.

Big Ben and Westminster BridgeThe Elizabeth Tower is floodlit gold against the night sky. The view from Westminster Bridge with the Houses of Parliament stretching along the river is the image of London that appears in every film. Your chauffeur stops on the bridge or on the south bank for the full panorama.
3.

Buckingham Palace and The MallThe palace is floodlit, the Victoria Memorial glows at the centre of the roundabout, and The Mall — the ceremonial avenue leading to it — is empty and quiet. During the day this area is packed with tourists and barriers. At night, it looks the way it does in royal photographs.
4.

Piccadilly CircusThe famous advertising screens and the Eros statue. Unlike most London landmarks, Piccadilly is more vibrant at night than during the day — the colour and energy of the West End is at its best after dark. Stop for photographs, walk around the junction, watch London go by.
5.

Trafalgar SquareThe fountains are lit from below, Nelson’s Column stands against the night sky, and the National Gallery is illuminated across the north side of the square. The square itself is largely open and easy to photograph from multiple angles.
6.

St Paul’s Cathedral and Millennium BridgeThe dome is floodlit across the river from the Tate Modern side. The Millennium Bridge in the foreground, the dome behind — one of the most photographed night views in London. The bridge itself is pedestrian so your chauffeur waits at the south bank while you cross for the photograph.
7.

The Shard and London BridgeWestern Europe’s tallest building lit from within. From London Bridge you get the Shard, Borough Market below it, and the full City skyline. A popular addition for 3-hour tours that start in the east before heading west.
8.

South Bank and the London EyeThe Thames walk between Westminster and Tower Bridge, with the London Eye lit in changing colours and the City skyline across the river. The South Bank stays busy and atmospheric until late — restaurants, street musicians, and the river all lit up. A good ending point for the tour.

Popular ways to use the evening

The photographer’s evening
Tower Bridge south bank, Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge (City skyline), Millennium Bridge (St Paul’s), Trafalgar Square. Six stops, six different photographs that look nothing like each other. Budget 20-25 minutes per stop.
The romantic evening
Buckingham Palace and The Mall, Westminster Bridge, a walk along the South Bank, dinner at a restaurant your chauffeur books. The Executive Saloon is the most popular vehicle for couples — private, quiet, and a different class from a black cab.
After dinner or after a show
The West End empties out around 22:30 and the streets around Covent Garden, Piccadilly, and Leicester Square are at their best between 22:00 and midnight. Many clients book the London by Night tour to follow dinner in Mayfair or a West End show — starting from the restaurant or theatre rather than the hotel.

Questions

How much does a private London by night tour cost?+

London by Night tours start from £225 (around US$285) for a Budget Saloon up to 3 passengers. Executive Saloon is £295 (~US$374). Executive MPV for up to 6 passengers is £325 (~US$412) — roughly US$54 each in a group of 6. Luxury SUV is £565 (~US$716). All prices are per vehicle for 3 hours, VAT and Congestion Charge included.

What time does the tour start?+

Start times vary by season. In winter (October to March) we recommend 19:00 — it is fully dark and the floodlights are on. In summer (April to September) we recommend 21:00 — London does not get properly dark until around 21:30, and the blue hour around that time produces the best photographs. Both start times are available when you book.

Do we get out of the car at each stop?+

Yes. Your chauffeur parks or waits at each landmark while you get out, walk to the best vantage point, and take your photographs. This is not a drive-by tour. Tower Bridge from the south bank, Westminster Bridge, Piccadilly Circus — all involve getting out. The car is always nearby.

Is the route fixed?+

No. We suggest a classic night route but if you have specific landmarks, neighbourhoods, or photographs in mind, tell your chauffeur and he will build the evening around them. Popular additions include the Shard from London Bridge, Abbey Road, the City skyline from Waterloo Bridge, and Canary Wharf.

Can we extend the tour beyond 3 hours?+

Yes. If you want to extend on the night, ask your chauffeur — additional hours are priced at the standard hourly rate for your vehicle. If you know in advance you want a longer evening, contact us before booking and we will quote a 4 or 5-hour bespoke itinerary.

Can we start from a restaurant or theatre instead of our hotel?+

Yes. Many clients book the London by Night tour to follow dinner in Mayfair or a West End show — your chauffeur picks you up from the restaurant or theatre exit and drops you back at your hotel at the end. Just provide the pickup address when you book.

Is there a minimum number of passengers?+

No. The price is per vehicle, not per person. The tour is very popular with couples in an Executive Saloon — two people, a private car, London at night. It is also excellent value for a group of 6 in an Executive MPV at around US$54 each.

What is the cancellation policy?+

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your collection time. Inside 24 hours, charges apply as set out in our Terms and Conditions.
