Quick answer

A private Windsor Castle tour from London with Chauffeurz costs from £445 per vehicle (around US$564) for a Budget Saloon up to 3 passengers. The price is per vehicle, not per person — a family of 6 in an Executive MPV pays £715 total (around US$907), roughly US$151 each. The tour is 6 hours door to door: approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour each way, plus 2.5 to 3 hours inside the castle. Your chauffeur collects you from your London hotel, drives you to Windsor, waits while you explore, and brings you back. No group, no coach, no fixed departure. Windsor Castle admission (~£32 adult, ~US$41) is not included and must be booked separately — we recommend GetYourGuide for free cancellation.

Why Windsor Castle is worth a full day

Windsor Castle is not a museum. It is a working royal palace — King Charles III uses it regularly, and state ceremonies take place on the grounds throughout the year. When you walk through the State Apartments, you are walking through rooms that have been at the centre of British history for nearly a thousand years.

For American visitors in particular, Windsor offers something that no American city can: a direct, physical connection to the monarchy that shaped the English-speaking world. The chapel alone — with its royal tombs from Henry VIII to Queen Elizabeth II — is worth the journey.

What this is, and what it is not

Please read before booking

This is a private chauffeur driven day journey, not a guided tour. Your chauffeur drives, waits, and looks after you, but does not accompany you inside Windsor Castle or provide commentary. Windsor Castle includes a free multilingual audio guide with admission, available in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and other languages — it is thorough and well-produced.

If you would rather have a qualified expert walking with you through the State Apartments and St George’s Chapel, we can arrange a Blue Badge Guide from £250 for a half day. But for most families and couples, the audio guide is exactly the right level of detail.

Price by vehicle

All prices are per vehicle for the full six hours, not per person. A family of five pays the same as a couple in the same car. All prices include VAT. USD equivalents are approximate based on current exchange rates.

The day, hour by hour

Indicative rather than fixed. Every timing here is yours to adjust, and your chauffeur will follow your lead.

09:30

Collection

Your chauffeur arrives at your London hotel or address. A 9:30 departure is ideal if you want to catch the Changing of the Guard at 11:00 AM.

09:30 to 10:30

The drive to Windsor

Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour via the M4. Windsor is significantly closer to London than Stonehenge — more time at the castle, less time in the car.

10:30 to 11:00

Changing of the Guard (optional)

If you arrive by 10:30, you can watch the Changing of the Guard from inside the castle grounds or from outside the gates. The ceremony takes place most days at 11:00 AM — check the schedule at rct.uk before you book your visit slot.

11:00 to 14:00

Windsor Castle

Two and a half to three hours covers the State Apartments, St George’s Chapel, Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, and the castle grounds comfortably. Your chauffeur waits nearby and is reachable by phone throughout.

14:00 to 15:00

Lunch or a walk (optional)

Windsor town has good independent restaurants and cafes. The Long Walk — a three-mile avenue from the castle toward the horizon — is free and a lovely way to spend an extra half hour. Or head straight back to London.

Returned to your hotel with the afternoon and evening ahead of you. Windsor is close enough that you are never rushing.

What to see inside Windsor Castle

The State Apartments
The grandest rooms in the castle, used for state occasions and royal entertaining. The Grand Reception Room, the Waterloo Chamber, and the St George’s Hall are among the finest ceremonial rooms in Europe. The walls are hung with works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Rembrandt from the Royal Collection.
St George’s Chapel
A Gothic masterpiece and the burial place of ten British monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, King George VI, and Henry VIII. It also hosted the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. The chapel closes on Sundays for worship — check in advance.
Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House
Built in 1924 to a 1:12 scale, with running water, working electricity, and miniature books written by real authors including Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling. Surprisingly compelling — even for those who were not expecting to be interested.
The Castle Precincts and the Long Walk
The grounds are part of the admission and offer views across the Thames Valley. The Long Walk stretches three miles from the castle to a copper equestrian statue of George III on the horizon. Free to walk and one of the most impressive vistas in England.
The Changing of the Guard
The Windsor version of the famous ceremony takes place most days at 11:00 AM. It is slightly less crowded than the Buckingham Palace version and can be watched from both inside and outside the castle walls. Check the official schedule at rct.uk as it varies by day and season.

Practical things to know before you go

Book tickets in advance — the castle sells outWindsor Castle frequently sells out on weekends and in summer. Book through GetYourGuide for free cancellation, or directly through the Royal Collection Trust. On-the-day tickets cost £36 versus £32 in advance and are not guaranteed.
Arrive early to beat the crowdsThe castle opens at 10:00 AM. Queues peak between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. If you book a morning slot, your private chauffeur gets you there at exactly the right time — no Tube, no train delays, no arriving rushed.
St George’s Chapel closes on SundaysThe chapel is reserved for worship on Sundays. If visiting the burial place of Queen Elizabeth II is a priority for your group, plan for a weekday visit.
Windsor is 8 miles from Heathrow Terminal 5If you are arriving at Heathrow in the morning, your chauffeur can take you directly to Windsor before checking into your London hotel — an excellent way to make the most of your first day without losing it to check-in queues.
The audio guide is included and genuinely goodAvailable in over a dozen languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Mandarin. It covers everything you need to know in each room at a pace you control. Most visitors find it is the right amount of information.

This is right for you if

  • You have any interest in British royal history — this is the most accessible and complete royal experience in England
  • You want to see where Queen Elizabeth II is buried — St George’s Chapel is the only place to do this
  • You are a family with children — Windsor is engaging at every age, and your private vehicle makes it completely relaxed
  • You are arriving at or departing from Heathrow — Windsor is on the way and makes a perfect arrival or departure day trip
  • You want to be back in London by mid-afternoon with the evening free
  • You want the freedom to spend as long as you like in St George’s Chapel without a group moving you on

Book something else if

  • ×You want Windsor and Stonehenge in the same day — they sit in different directions and there is not enough time for both properly. Book them separately
  • ×You are visiting on a Sunday and St George’s Chapel is your main reason — the chapel is closed to visitors on Sundays
  • ×You want a guide included in the vehicle price — add the Blue Badge Guide option, or the castle audio guide covers everything you need

Questions

How much does a private Windsor Castle tour cost?+

Private Windsor Castle tours with Chauffeurz start from £445 (around US$564) for a Budget Saloon up to 3 passengers. Executive MPV for up to 6 passengers is £715 (around US$907) — roughly US$151 per person in a group of 6. All prices are per vehicle, not per person, and include VAT. Luxury SUV is £1,435. Get an exact quote by selecting your vehicle above.

Is Windsor Castle admission included?+

No. Windsor Castle admission is £32 per adult (around US$41) when booked online in advance, or £36 on the day. Children aged 5-17 pay £16. Under 5s enter free. We recommend booking through GetYourGuide for free cancellation flexibility. We keep admission separate so the vehicle price stays clear and so a plan change does not leave you holding non-refundable tickets.

How far is Windsor Castle from London?+

Windsor Castle is approximately 25 miles from Central London — about 45 minutes to 1 hour by car. It is significantly closer than Stonehenge, which means more time inside the castle and less time driving. Windsor is also only 8 miles from Heathrow Terminal 5, making it an excellent arrival or departure day option.

Can we combine Windsor with Stonehenge in one day?+

Windsor and Stonehenge sit in different directions from London — Windsor is due west, Stonehenge is southwest. Combining both in one day means a lot of driving and not enough time at either. We recommend them as separate days. If you want a long combined day, see our Stonehenge and Bath tour which pairs two destinations in the same direction properly.

Is St George’s Chapel open to visitors?+

St George’s Chapel is included in standard Windsor Castle admission but closes on Sundays for worship. It is the burial place of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, King George VI, and Henry VIII. If visiting the chapel is a priority, plan for a weekday. Check the Royal Collection Trust website for exact hours on your specific date, as the chapel occasionally closes for royal events.

Can we see the Changing of the Guard?+

Yes, if you time it right. The Changing of the Guard at Windsor takes place most days at 11:00 AM. It is free to watch from outside the castle walls, or from inside with your admission ticket. A 9:30 AM departure from London gets you there comfortably by 10:30 AM. Check the official schedule at rct.uk as it varies by season and day.

Can you pick us up from Heathrow for the Windsor tour?+

Yes, and Windsor is one of the best Heathrow arrival day trips precisely because the castle is only 8 miles from Terminal 5. If your flight lands in the morning, your chauffeur can take you directly to Windsor before checking into your London hotel — an excellent way to make the most of your first day. Ask us when you book about combining your Heathrow arrival transfer with the Windsor tour.

What else is there to see in Windsor?+

Windsor town centre has good independent restaurants and cafes. Eton College is a 10-minute walk across Windsor Bridge. The Long Walk — a free three-mile avenue from the castle toward a statue of George III — is one of the most impressive views in England. Runnymede, where Magna Carta was signed in 1215, is a 10-minute drive. Your chauffeur knows the area and can suggest stops based on your interests and time available.

Is there a minimum number of passengers?+

No. The price is for the vehicle, not per person. One person pays the same as six in the same vehicle category. This is excellent value for families and groups — and worth being upfront about for solo travellers considering the cost.

What is the cancellation policy?+

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your collection time. Inside 24 hours, charges apply as set out in our Terms and Conditions. Windsor Castle admission tickets booked through GetYourGuide have their own free cancellation policy — check the terms at the time of booking.
