A Traveller's Guide to Chester

Roman fortress, mediaeval market, and the gateway to Wales.

Chester is what England looked like before the Industrial Revolution decided to remake it. Founded by the Roman Twentieth Legion in 79 AD as the fortress of Deva Victrix, the modern city retains the exact grid layout of the original fortress — two intersecting main streets meeting at the site of the Roman headquarters where the Cross now stands. The two-mile circuit of city walls survives essentially intact, incorporating Roman foundations, Norman gates, mediaeval towers and Georgian additions. Walk them from Bridgegate anti-clockwise past Eastgate (with its ornate Victorian clock, Britain's second most photographed after Big Ben), across Northgate, and back down past the King Charles Tower on the north-west corner — the tower from which Charles I watched the defeat of his army at the Battle of Rowton Heath in 1645.

The Rows are unique. Nowhere else in the world has a covered upper-level walkway of continuous mediaeval shops running through the historic centre. The mixture of Tudor timber, Victorian black-and-white "magpie" reconstruction, and genuine surviving fourteenth-century undercrofts makes shopping in Chester unlike any other British city. Watergate Street runs down toward the Roodee (Chester Racecourse) with the oldest known Row buildings; Bridge Street rises past the Falcon and the Old Boot Inn to the Cross; Eastgate Street runs past Chester Cathedral and Grosvenor Precinct.

Chester Cathedral, begun in 1093, was originally the Benedictine Abbey of St Werburgh — the last of the great English cathedrals to survive Henry VIII's dissolution intact, becoming a diocesan cathedral in 1541. The refectory (still used for lunch), the cloisters, the choir stalls with their misericords carved with mediaeval humour, and the peregrine falcons that nest on the tower every spring make it one of the most rewarding cathedral visits in the country.

Beyond the walls, Chester Zoo houses over thirty-five thousand animals across one hundred and twenty-eight acres — the finest zoo in Britain and consistently in Europe's top three. Chester Racecourse, the Roodee, has run horse meetings continuously since 1539, longer than any racecourse in the world; the May Festival is one of the great fixtures of the English racing calendar. And North Wales begins fifteen minutes west across the Dee — Conwy, Caernarfon, Snowdonia National Park all within an hour and a half.
