A Traveller's Guide to Alnwick
Where the Percy family built England's second castle, and where Harry Potter learned to fly.
Alnwick Castle has been the seat of the Percy family — Earls, then Dukes of Northumberland — since 1309. That is one continuous line of the same family in the same castle for over seven hundred years, an English record that only the Windsors themselves can rival. The castle contains state apartments open to the public, the private residence still occupied by the current Duke and Duchess, and one of the finest private art collections in Britain (Titian, Van Dyck, Canaletto, Turner). But the castle's global fame arrived in 2001 when Chris Columbus chose it as the exterior of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The outer bailey where Harry learned to fly with Madam Hooch; the courtyard where he first met Ron and Hermione; the great gatehouse leading to the inner ward — all of it here, unchanged. Every summer, broomstick lessons are still offered in the outer bailey for visiting children.
Directly opposite the castle sits The Alnwick Garden, the personal project of Jane Percy, Duchess of Northumberland — a forty-million-pound contemporary garden designed by the Belgian firm Wirtz International, opened progressively from 2001. The Grand Cascade is the largest water feature ever built in Britain; the Ornamental Garden is a formal masterpiece of clipped hornbeam; the notorious Poison Garden holds over one hundred deadly plants (opium, hemlock, deadly nightshade, cannabis) behind locked gates and guided-tour-only access. Lindisfarne (Holy Island), reached by a tidal causeway with fixed safe-crossing hours, is forty-five minutes; the island holds Lindisfarne Priory (founded 635 AD by St Aidan, home of the Lindisfarne Gospels), Lindisfarne Castle (remodelled by Edwin Lutyens for Country Life editor Edward Hudson), and some of the most spiritual landscape in the British Isles. Cragside — the country house built by the Victorian arms engineer Lord Armstrong, the first house in the world lit by hydroelectric power — sits thirty minutes south. Together, Alnwick and its coastal hinterland offer one of the last truly uncrowded corners of England.
